if children cannot take failure then they will grow up like our policians who never admit that they are wrong and always think that they are right.
children nowadays are like protected animals, cannot scold, cannot cane and when they fail exams their parents go after the school.
is something wrong somewhere?

I do agree a LITTLE adversity is good for training our students, but when adversity OVERWHELMS the norm & SEVERELY affects the progress of the norm, it is time to ponder whether there’s too much adversity. An example:
u’re in an institute who trains runners for the 100m race; most of you’re doing the average of perhaps 10~11secs; but the remaining 66.6% of ur fellow trainees’re like Maurice Greene or Carl Lewis’s standards, clocking an average of BELOW-10secs. Will u not get demoralized? When the time comes to eliminate those who’re sub-par, wo will get eliminated? Who’re the portion setting the standard?
Suppose then, you wish to improve. U seek ur fellow trainees for advice, techniques, etc. But half of the time u literally DUN understand their language, & they, not yours. Is it ur fault for not striving hard? Have u NOT attempt to improve?
Next, u seek the seasoned coach assistants, since they’re suppose to assist the main coaches to help you, but alas, they’re just like your fellow trainees; these assistant pools’re dominated by people who FOR SOME PARTICULAR reason, you CAN’t communicate with. They’re just hanging around the institute to help the coach b4 they qualify for their opening in some other countries’ major race..so >half of your channel for help has been terminated, is it your fault?
The above is just an imaginery/hypothetic scenario to serve as food for thought. I”m sure there’s nothing of the sort happening in this country, which is of course, as someone put it, “A Land of opportunities”.

Dear Mr Brown,
Ah! How about giving a little bit of adversity to the future pappy MPs?? Do away with the GRC system? They will be toughen by learning how to fight their own entry into politics than to sneak in by the backdoor.
……………talk about crutch (or izzit crouch??) mentality……
Cheers!

The issue about being tough in school is to brush up the skills of our future children. However, it can be a double-edged sword.
It is true that SIngapore had produced elites in many fields due to the ‘conducive environment’ provided by the government.
On the flip side, we must not ignore the fact that not everyone is smart enough to be geared this way and the abilities of each child is diffeerent ultimately.
So… more must be done to cater to each child although it is still an ideal case now. Singaproe is definitely shifting to it.

I think it’s fair to raise an issue if expectations are unrealistic. My son in K1 is expected to recognise more than 100 Chinese characters. He only manages 20 at the moment, but he’s slowly getting there.
I don’t think such things should be rushed. Videos of him learning to crawl are still crystal clear. It’s amusing to see that they expect so much from our kids when I only learned to write my own name in P1.
But what’s even more amusing is the shamelessly self-centered way that some parents have been compalining about the PSLE papers in the media. “My top student son” indeed.
