but yah this pay hike is siao man. gahmen like to compare gst with other 1st world countries, why not compare they pay to ministers in other first world countries too?
also, isn’t our pm holding a double appointment as finance minister as well? doesn’t he get paid for that too?

I was just wondering about how they come up with the benchmarks for the ministers, and I can’t help but wonder at why do they use the top professionals in areas like Law and Accounting. I’m sure not all the ministers qualify to even work in those particular areas.
In fact, I was wondering if it might be better, to benchmark the minister’s pay, to the next highest paying job that individually, they each would have pursued, if not a life serving the nation in the government.
Of course due to various factors, it will be imbalanced, but I’m sure it can be worked around. For instance, after deciding upon the various pay schedules of each minister, allow for only a certain margin or range to exist between ministers such that the highest and lowest paid minister does not exceed a value of say (for example) 10% of their pay.
Just a thought on benchmarking. Because I’m sure that is how most basic wages are determined at least, before any other bonuses like performance or work-related additions are made. Unless of course, all our ministers are capable of earning millions per year in their next best occupation. Truly talented I’m sure.

That old fart is doing this to strengthen his political stronghold.
So that his surbordinates will be loyal to him and will remain in position as long as they can. This is good for his party and him cos’ they will stay united for a very long time and no confidential info will be leaked out so long as they do not leave their post for the private sector. HE is very smart and has planned his move all along the way. All these reasons giving about having competent government and remain competiive are just reasons he need to cook up to justify the increase. We can argue till the cows come back, but it will not change the fact it will increase anyway.
So sgreans stop wasting your breath and brains. Just look at the real picture and you will know.

First of all, I agree they all get a pay increase BUT this increase is really INCREASED. Too much la. There’ll be alot of good ‘REASONS’ for it and why talk, talk, talk when it had been DECIDED even before they talk about it. There was no public debate on it and suddently ‘BANG’. Why not convince Singaporeans first and put a vote to it? Like vote for president, la. Sorry, it’s not a political talk. Just airing my views only. Piang, GST also going up soon. No wonder, ABBA sings the song ‘money money money, it’s a rich man’s world’……….

How much do we get from the 2% GST increment? is it more or less than the pay hike? Shd be more, right… so get back to your life… :)
Since the pay hike is done deal with Part I and Part II or even Part III… i think what we can do is …
5 years down the road… measure how many Shin Corp deals we have made… opps, i mean, social improvements they have made… versus this hike… Oh, BTW, i surffer with the civil servants… coz i think they will be the ones doing the execution… :)
Talking about Shin Corp… why is it that really no heads have rolled? Is it because we may still earn money or what?
Hmmm…. quesions… questions… question… just hope that the populance remembers this day 5 years down the road… probably the greatest news of the decade…
Cheers

April 13th, 2007 at 6:15 pm

Hey, guys be a little considerate. They’re the poorest of citizens. Living from hand to mouth every day. To make matter worst, the Sand and Granite ban by Indonesia has greatly impact their abilities to afford more properties. So, please support the GST hike and pledge what
you can’t afford for their cause. Minimum GIRO deduction $100/- per week per person would suffice. It’s a little cost to pay for our Security, Future and good Governance.
